What is a Symbol?
A symbol is something that represents something larger than itself. Symbols are everywhere. They can be found in books, movies, songs, posters, signs, etc. The flag of the United States is a symbol. Physically, the flag is just a piece of cloth. Symbolically however, it represents liberty, freedom, and power. Symbolism is a person's use of symbols.
Universal and Unique Symbols
A universal symbol is a symbol that has a meaning that many people would recognize. Such symbols would include the dove for peace, the dollar sign for money, and the red cross for hospitals. A unique symbol is a symbol that is not recognizable instantly. For example in the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzane Collins, the Mockingjay is at first nothing important, but it then as the series matures, goes on to become a symbol of hope and defiance against the Capitol.

Identifying Symbolism
Here is my symbolism analysis of the song Save Rock and Roll by Fall Out Boy. To understand the symbolism behind the lyrics, you have to know the circumstances in which they were written. In 2009, Fall Out Boy took a hiatus of four years, and reunited in 2013. This was the first song of theirs in four years, and their big comeback. Many people didn't think Fall Out Boy could be successful again, but they defied the odds.

"Save Rock And Roll" (feat. Elton John) Until your breathing stops (stops stops) Until your breathing stops (stops stops) Until your (your, your, your, your) Forever, forever I need more dreams And less life I need that dark In a little more light I cried tears you'll never see So darn you, you can go cry me an ocean And leave me be You are what you love Not who loves you In a world full of the word 'Yes' I'm here to scream No, no Wherever I go, go Trouble seems to follow I only plugged in to save rock and roll Rock and roll, no Wherever I go, go Trouble seems to follow I only plugged in to save rock and roll Until your breathing stops (stops stops) Until your breathing stops (stops stops) Until your (your, your, your, your) Forever, forever [Elton John:] Blood brothers in desperation An oath of silence for the voice of our generation Whoa, how'd it get to be only me? Like I'm the last darn kid still kicking That still believes [Patrick Stump & Elton John:] I will defend the faith Going down swinging I will save the songs That we can't stop singing No, no Wherever I go, go Trouble seems to follow I only plugged in to save rock and roll Rock and roll, no Wherever I go, go Trouble seems to follow I only plugged in to save rock and roll (Forever, forever) [4x] Oh no, we won't go 'Cause we don't know when to quit, oh oh (Until your breathing stops, stops, stops) (Until your breathing stops, stops, stops) (Until your, your, your, your, your) (Forever, forever) [Elton John:] You are what you love Not who loves you In a world full of the word 'Yes' I'm here to scream No, no Wherever I go, go Trouble seems to follow I only plugged in to save rock and roll Rock and roll, no Wherever I go, go Trouble seems to follow Only plugged in to save rock and roll [6x] Oh no, we won't go 'Cause we don't know when to quit, oh oh [Elton John 2x:] No, no Wherever I go, go Trouble seems to follow I only plugged in to save rock and roll Thanks to Erica, Caren, AddictedtoFOB7326, Jackie, Bex for correcting these lyrics.
