What is a Prediction?
A prediction is combining new information with previous information and making an educated guess about what event will occur next. You probably do it without realizing it, especially when you read an immersing book or watch a transfixing movie. When you predict you use text clues to guess at future events.
Elements To Help Prediction-Making
Clues in the Text- Look for clues that hint at certain events. Most "clues" are there just to trick you, but sometimes the clues will be legitimate.
Connections- Take into account the previous events and actions of the character. Based on that, predict what will happen next.
Your Experience- Take into account your own experiences in real life, as well as in other books you have read. If a certain situation goes one way in real life or other literature, it is likely it will occur in this particular story.
Types of Clues
Plot- Past events in the plot may help you predict what will happen next. They will sometimes foreshadow future events.
Character- By examining the character's personality and past actions, you can predict what he or she will do next.
Setting- Setting details can hint at future events, for example if in a horror movie the setting is a dark tree house, you can probably predict that the tree house is haunted.
Revisiting Predictions
After you have made your prediction and continue to read the story, your predictions may be either incorrect or in need of a revision.
Making Predictions(Demonstration)
Ready! Set! GO! The friendly competition between John and his friends started with a bang. They raced across the uneven pavement that their parents had told them so many times not to run on, and they were neck and neck. He knew he should be more careful, but he didn't care. But John was slowly getting the upper hand. Closer and closer he got to the finish line. John looked back and saw that he now was way farther than anyone else. Too bad he didn't notice the baseball right in his running path...
I predict that John will trip over the baseball. This is because the clues highlighted clues in the text indicate that something bad will happen/. Also, in other books and movies, reckless characters always end up in trouble.
I have made predictions when watching many books and movies throughout the year.
